Kanopy, the on-demand platform for public libraries and educational institutions, has partnered with German cultural group the Goethe-Institut to showcase 48 critically acclaimed German films on its VOD platform.
The partnership, announced Wednesday, Oct. 3, German Unity Day, will feature titles from nearly a century of German cinema, from F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu to Sebastian Schipper’s 2015 thriller Victoria, which was famously done in a single, 2 hour, 18 minute, one-shot take.
The Goethe-Institut will curate the list of titles, which will be available for free for Kanopy users, and anyone else who wants to watch, for the month of October. The project, which goes under the title of “Wunderbar Together: A Celebration of German Film,” is part of the Deutschlandjahr, the year of German-American friendship.
Other titles on the “Wunderbar” list include Fritz Lang’s remastered 1927 masterpiece, Metropolis; Robert Wiene’s 1920 horror classic, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari; Jan Ole Gerster’s droll dramedy A Coffee in Berlin and Christian Petzold’s psychodrama Barbara, both from 2012. The lineup also features some of the best German films directed by women, including Margarethe von Trotta’s Hannah Arendt (2012), Maria Schrader’s Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe (2016) and The Forest for the Trees, the 2003 feature debut of Toni Erdmann director Maren Ade.
“We hope the thought-provoking collection not only piques the interest of American cinephiles, but further cultivates their understanding of the German-American relationship and its continued significance,” said Goethe-Institut regional director of communications Verena Hutter.
